Brasilia is a good place to disclose talents to the Brazilian rock, like “Paralamas do Sucesso”, “Legião Urbana” and “Capital Inicial”. And there they started the independent rock band known as “LUDOV”.
Everything started when two friends, Mauro Motoki and Habacuque Nakazato, both were born in Brasilia, decided to learn piano, but, after a few months, they changed from the piano to the guitar. When they were in high school, they gathered a group called “Looney Tune”. However, in 1995 they move to São Paulo to study at university, Mauro studied Art and Communication and Habacuque, Social Communication.
One day, at a friend’s party, Habacuque heard one little girl that was singing and the sound was so good. She was Vanessa Krongold: she was studying Marketing in the same university of Habacuque and she became the lead singer of the group.
Then, they decided to make a musical band and they were trying to find the name for the group. In that time, Habacuque bought a Pixies CD called "Trompe Le Monde”, which had a song called “U-Mass” that said “of the April birds and the May bees”. So he suggested to use “Maybees” as the name of the band. Mauro remembered that using a bug’s name was a good idea and could give good luck, just like “The Beatles”. Mauro and Habacuque also created the logo of the group: a star with an eclipse above.
The first time that Maybees played was in FUMECA, a musical festival at ECA University (SP), in July, 1996. And, in the same year, they won the music festival of ESPM University (SP).
They were singing in English all the time and their lyrics were also in English. But it was a big problem to the group’s life. For this reason, in November of 2001, in the UPLOAD Festival, they sang some lyrics in English and others in Portuguese. By the end of their performance they announced the end of the Maybees phase.
After their vacations, they got together and decided to continue playing but with a different style. The new way was to work with songs in Portuguese but they didn’t change their specific catchy tune. In May of 2002, the group had an opportunity to play again but they needed a new name to the band. Like the first time, Habacuque had the idea from a project called “Ludovico” based on the “A Clockwork Orange” movie and with this idea, they chose the name: “LUDOV”.
By this time, the group had a new player, Paulo "Chapolin", to replace the previous drummer. Then the group played in MTV Brasil and Disk MTV. In 2004, they won some prizes in MTV Video Music Brasil, with “Princesa” video clip, and in 2005 they applied for another prize with “Kiptonita” video clip.
In 2006, the Disney Channel invited the group to sing the Brazilian version of a “High School Musical” song: they played “What I've Been Looking For”. After this, many people knew about LUDOV, not only in the underground places. Nowadays, LUDOV plays his songs in pubs and other places where you can find independent rock bands and they are also making some great pocket shows.
